Royal Academy of Arts - Michelangelo's rarely-seen drawings

Created as gifts for friends and lovers, these rarely-seen drawings by Michelangelo bring us closer to the emotional core of his work – the personal and private story you might not see in his grand, most famous pieces.

Especially well known for the particular tenderness of his treatments of the Virgin and Child – Michelangelo often emphasised touch, giving physical expression to the divine bond between mother and child.

His religious and philosophical beliefs are most clearly manifested in his mythological drawings of the early 1530s, such as in Three Labours of Hercules, pictured above.

Don't miss your chance to see these stunning drawings, on loan from the Royal Collection, set alongside Bill Viola's immersive installations in our main galleries.
