Spring 2018 Collection - Paris Fashion Week

Back to the Grande Palais for yet another monumental Chanel fashion show, courtesy of fashion god Karl Lagerfeld.

On a set embodying Gorges du Verdon, in the South of France, models walked alongside a huge waterfall, over a water pool. Rather fittingly, to go with the water, within the collection there were a lot of waterproofs, in the form of clear plastic accessories. At least if it rains next summer we can keep dry and look good. Also, check out the waterfall fringing on literally everything. Basically dressing up as a waterfall is going to be in next season? No? In all seriousness, the trend vibes we are getting from the collection is Sixties Futurism, in the most Chanel way possible.

For the beauty, they had a very sixties inspired statement eye paired with slightly bronzed cheeks and a orangey red lip and the hair tied back but slicked down at the scalp. (See imagery)

The Modern Woman and Power Dressing

When we hear the term power dressing, it often sparks images of women dressed for business. The term originates from the late 1970s and evolved during the 1980s as we saw many women entering more professional roles.

So with the style closely linked to women’s style within the business and political environment, what is power dressing today? Has it changed much?

With the second woman Prime Minister in the UK, Theresa May and another female candidate running for office in the United States, will women’s power translate in the way that they dress.

In the Margaret Thatcher era, in the 80s, we saw suiting with big shoulders which signified power and turned women’s work wear into something else with a masculine edge. What is interesting though, is we have been seeing the return of statement shoulders in many designer’s collections. So are they coming back into our work wear wardrobe?

The Modern Woman and Power Dressing

Roots to power dressing can be found in none other than Coco Chanel’s Chanel suit, which was a revolutionary shift in how women were dressed back in the 20s. The suit allowed women to de-sexualize themselves in order to be taken seriously. And what is interesting about this, although fronted by Karl Lagerfeld now, the most recent Chanel show highlighted the women behind the couture operation. And what was on the catwalk? The classic Chanel suit morphed into new silhouettes. With you guessed it, the power shoulder.

Of course over the decades, the suit and power dressing trends have changed, but what will we be seeing in the coming seasons? Aside from designers, today’s icons include figures such as The Duchess of Cambridge and Emma Watson. Both manage to dress powerfully, with a feminine and trend driven edge, and we can definitely learn a bit from them.

But trend wise for this FW 16/17, here are a few things to incorporate into your work wear wardrobe.

1 – A serious trench coat. Trench coats with an edge can be seen on the Burberry, Gucci, Prada and Celine runways.

2- Ruffles. Details such as ruffles ass femininity back into a very masculine way of dressing. Look to Gucci for inspiration. Opt for a ruffled blouse of shirt to play it safe.

3 – Checks. Seen at Victoria Beckham this season. To add an updated twist on the check suit, do not be scared to mix the checks up, or pair with other prints or block colours.

What has Karl Lagerfeld done now!? 33rd Chanel Haute Couture AW 16

What has Karl Lagerfeld come up with now?

As always, any Chanel runway show is highly anticipated each season for Lagerfeld’s brilliant ideas and creativity. Not just in his collections, but how he presents them on his world famous runways. We have already seen the amazing airport set, the supermarket and a casino, so what did he come up with next.

In contrast to his simple, no set runway earlier this year for the Chanel Ready to wear AW16 show, the most recent show, Chanel Haute Couture aw16, showed us a stage of the atelier.

The Grande Palais was turned into a Chanel work studio, putting his seamstresses centre stage. This reminds us of who really brings the collections to life. So well done Karl for giving credit, where credit is due.

As with Couture, the nature of the fashion has to be hand made in order to deserve the title. Therefore, it takes many hours to construct such designs. Making it ever more important to highlight the work that goes into the collections.

So enough about the set. What was shown on the runway this season. Of course, being Chanel, there was bounds and bounds of tweed. The inclusion of the tweed pays great homage to the house’s classic and iconic style, and really reminds us of what Chanel is so famous for. However, the tweed skirt-suit staple has been slightly updated. The show presented us with some different proportions. Think big shoulders, cropped sleeves and flared mini skirts. We also saw dresses enhanced with feathers as well as many other embellishments.

As for footwear, I think that it is safe to say that the thigh high boot will be around for a little longer as we see models strutting with their legs covered in beautiful, sky high boots.

Blake Lively, The Queen of Cannes.

Blake lively never fails to impress at Cannes film festival, and this year was no exception.

At the 69th Cannes film festival, Blake Lively (who is currently pregnant with husband Ryan Reynolds) was seen walking the red carpet in gowns by Versace and Vivienne Westwood Couture.

It was speculated that Blake had taken inspiration from Disney princesses as her looks on the red carpet mostly resembled Princess looks. For example, Blake wore a very “Elsa” blue Versace dress and also a “Cinderella” gown.
